How to Land Your First Entry Level Job

So you want to find a job in a big city, majored in some sort of business major, but honestly have no clue where to start?

Looking for a job that fits you perfectly after graduation can be tough!

Employers are typically looking for 1-2 years of experience. Which can often make students (like myself) feel like:

Good Entry-Level positions can be tough to come by. After speaking with different employers, I have come up with some tips students can do through out college to help them land their first entry level job after graduation.

1.  Networking

It’s not always what you know, but who you know. People like to do business with people they know and like. Many job listings can put applicants in competition with several other people, however when you are recommended that puts you in a much smaller group. Also, create a LinkedIn account to connect with peers and employers on more of a professional level

2.  Set Yourself Apart

Job applicants that receive interviews and are winning jobs have found a way to differentiate themselves from competition. Sell your potential to the company.  Be able to show how the skills you have learned and gained from past experiences can help you be successful at the job you are trying to land.  Getting involved on your campus with organizations/groups can be attractive to employers as well.

3. Get an Internship

Getting an internship is one of the best ways to help you gain experience and get your foot in the door with an entry level position. Find a company that you would love to work for someday and apply to become an intern during school.

4. Build a Social Media Presence

Building your own person brand via social media is a great way to help get the attention of employers.  Almost all recruiters use social media for referencing potential applicants. Once you have created your personal brand, let your audience know you're human by showing off your personality and really interacting with them.

Red Door Interactive

Red Door Interactive is a full-service marketing agency that is focused on a variety of different services including: content marketing, social media campaigns, branding, paid media and email marketing.  According to their website, they use consumer data & analytics to help them identify opportunities and optimize marketing tactics.

Red Door seems to be one of the fastest growing marketing companies around the west coast area.  They have offices in 3 great locations including: Denver Colorado, along the beach in Carlsbad, and lastly in a very lively part of San Diego area, Petco Park.  Being that their office is within walking distance from the San Diego Padres Stadium, I am just going to assume that if you would like a career at Red Door you’re probably going to have to accept the fact that you will most likely become a Padres fan or convert to one.

The company started in 2002 by CEO, Reid Carr. They seem to be increasing immensely every year. Having over 70+ employees, it looks like they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.  From the looks of it Red Door seems to have a very upbeat, vibrant, team-oriented culture.  I have to give them some credit because they were ranked 23rd on the top 40 list of the Best Places to Work in Marketing and Media by Advertising Age.

Red Door has received numerous awards and achievements for their work. Some of their big awards include: Winning a gold award for their marketing campaign with Shea Homes that launched their new product, Shea3D, a bronze award for their “13 Days of Menu Faves” campaign that got them the best of online marketing-souplantation & sweet tomatoes. In this campaign Red Door decided to expand the online presence of Garden Fresh Restaurant Corporation by developing a 13-day Facebook contest.  The contest ended up becoming a huge success having over 114,000 people visit the contest tab and over 40,000 contest entries.  Their online Facebook presence increased to around 28,434 new fans. Red Door also received the California Excellence Award back in 2013.
